ícone Turning dreams into reality

He was a cell phone salesman in southern Wales performing in a talent show, Britain's Got Talent.

Before entering the stage, he confessed his dream was to sing. He felt he was born for it.

He had actually already performed in amateur opera, but an accident in 2003 put an early end to his career.

He explained that self-confidence had always been hard for him, since childhood, when he was bullied by his peers.

Shy, a bit embarrassed, he stood in front of the microphone and, right at this first moment, he was greeted by a sneer from one of the judges.

The music started and he let his voice out. He sang some verses from Nessun Dorma, the aria from Turandot, by Giácomo Puccini.

He chose the appropriate verses to perform on that day of June, 2007.

None shall sleep!... None shall sleep!

But my secret is hidden within me,

None will know my name! No, no!...

Vanish, oh night!

Set, stars!

At dawn, I will win!

I will win! I will win!

Yes, he won. The enthusiasm of the public and the commotion of the jury were substantial.

"That was a complete breath of fresh air! You are absolutely fantastic!" said one of them.

And another: "I think what we´ve got a case of a little lump of coal here that's going to turn into a diamond.".

Another said his voice was incredible, that he would be one of the favorites to win the competition if he kept singing like that.

Paul Potts made it to the finals. Two million people voted and, on the night of June 17, Paul bested all other candidates, winning the competition.

The award allowed him to perform for Her Majesty, the Queen of England, at the Royal Variety Performance, an annual concert for retired artists that takes place since 1912.

At his winning moment, Paul was invited to record an album by musical producer Simon Cowell.

As one of the judges predicted, he never returned to his former job. A new stage in his life had begun.

And since then he has performed even at New York's Rockefeller Center.

Paul Potts' could be the history of any of us.

All it takes is perseverance and, although lacking all the required self-confidence, investing in your dream.

How many of us walk the Earth enduring disappointments and sorrows because we wished so much to have done something we could not.

It is never too late. It is never too late to learn to play the piano, to sing, to go to college, to make that master degree, to travel abroad.

When Jesus said we could do everything He did, and much more, he was not addressing only the religious.

He was addressing each one of us, His sheep, urging us to make use of our innermost potential.

And, by doing so, make a better world, full of joy, of color, of people willing to help each other.

To show, at last, that this Earth is not a valley of tears, but a blessed garden of growth.

A place where we can all find happiness, right now.

Think about it!
