ícone A poem to the world

On that cold winter morning, all eyes were on Washington, Capital of the United States.

It was not just another freezing winter morning in the American Capital.

In those morning hours, the democratic ritual that had begun more than two centuries ago in that country was renewed: the inauguration of yet another democratically elected president.

The pomp and circumstances, as befits these events, although limited by the pandemic, in this 2021, were present.

However, among experienced politicians, renowned artists, celebrities and authorities, a young face emerged, with a gentle look.

She assumes the pulpit and her slim figure, the beauty of her black skin, impacted by the cold of the morning, draws attention.

No older than twenty-two years old, fresh out of the prestigious  Harvard University, where she graduated with honors in Sociology, was about to recite a poem of her own.

Amanda Gorman, the young poet, proclaimed to the world:

When the day comes, we wonder, where we can find light in this endless shadow.

We close the division because we know how to place our future in first place.

We must place our differences aside.

Let us layt down our weapons so that we can extend our arms to one another.

Let us not seek evil, let us seek harmony for all.

Let the globe, if nothing else, say that this is true: that even when sad, we grew up; even suffering, we had hope; even tired, we tried; that we will be forever connected, victorious, not because we will never know defeat again, but because we will never sow division again.

Scripture tells us to imagine that everyone will sit under their own vine and fig tree.

And no one will scare us.

If we want to live according to our own time, then victory will not be in the blade, but in every bridge we make.

Her words echoed from that parlor to the world.

On the social media, parts of her speech were commented on, forwarded, tagged, more than any other authority or prestigious artist present.

So it is when we listen with the heart.

It was the inauguration of the most powerful job in the world. The president of the nation with the largest army in the world.

But Amanda talked about peace, understanding and harmony.

She invited us to lay down our weapons so that we can embrace our neighbors.

And she reminded us that our victory will be in the bridges we build and not in the blade that can hurt.

These are the reflections we all need to make.

We live in days of turmoil and ethical neglect.

Days where we enrich ourselves over the atrocious pains and the grave of so many.

Days where violence and barbarism seem to be the keynote of human behavior.

But let us not get carried away by this noisy minority.

The wicked are bold, but they will soon perish, for only the good and the beautiful are permanent.

So, in the days of discouragement and sadness, let us listen to the song of the young poet reminding us that we will no longer know defeat, because we will no longer sow separation.
