ícone Before the mantle of longing involves us…

He was the youngest of three children. He seemed to have few concerns  about life.

He enjoyed spending time with his friends, having fun. He used to study, but that much, which was a constant reason for serious conversations with his father.

When he failed to join his older brother at the country's most prestigious University, his father was deeply disappointed. So was he.

If you had put more effort into it, you would succeed. That was what he heard from his father.

His mother told him that he should not be so hard on himself. Perhaps the University he was about to attend had something very special waiting for him.

After all, only God knows what the future holds.

She also reminded his son that life is a gift and it can be a beautiful, extraordinary, and wonderful journey. Although, it is not always an easy one.

It was at the University that he met an amazing girl. It was love at first sight, or better saying, love at second sight, because he was fascinated the first time he bumped into her.

And completely enchanted at the second one.

Because of her, he became a volunteer with a Campus patrol and even decided to earn his driver´s license, so he could help more.

It was after a fun weekend with the whole family, that he collapsed, he was rushed to the emergency room and never regained consciousness.

He passed away, victim of an aneurism. During the farewell, standing before his son´s lifeless body, in tears, the father expressed his feelings:

Chris, how I wish you had not left. You was with us for such short time. Only nineteen years.

Looking back over these years, I ask myself why I did not enjoy your company more.

Why did I spend so much time complaining that your grades, could have been better, that you could have gotten your driver´s license sooner, or of the of interest for some subjects?

I complained and complained. I could have used that time to truly look at you, to discover the life that shone in your eyes.

Eyes that are now closed and that I will never see again. I could have embraced you more to listen to your heart beating next to mine. The heart that I will never hear again.

I could have done so many things. And I ask myself what was the point of so many complaints when I could have shared your life much more deeply, my son.

Life is short. Life is brief and impermanent. Today we are here and, soon, we may be be called to gather the treasures we have acquired throughout our lives and continue our journey into the Great Beyond.

The same way, those who we love. So, now, if we are still together with the people we love, take the time to tell them how important they are to us, how deeply we care about them, and how much the make a huge difference in our life.

When there is still time and are side by side, let us tell our spouse, our child, our friend, that we love them.

Let us repeat that every morning, at every awakening, with every handshake, every embrace, every passing hour.

Let us cherish our time together while we are on the journey. Before longing alone becomes the mantle that wraps itself around us.
