On the day he turned fifty, an hourglass appeared on his nightstand.
A beautiful object made of polished metal, with two extremely fine glass bulbs at its center.
The white sand, moving slowly, had already formed two generous dunes in the bottom bulb.
He also noticed that there were more grains in that section than in the part yet to fall.
Beside the distinct piece, there was a message:
Who says the sand cannot stop?
Was it as kind of enigma? A lesson? A test? He did not have the faintest idea.
He pondered it for days, weeks...
Stop the sand? What could possibly hold it back?
He began to perform some experiences.
He increased the time he spent meditating. He transformed it into a daily discipline. After each period of introspection, he would go there and check the instrument.
The sand was still falling.
While praying, he tried to detect if the sand had stopped falling, even for a second. But he did not see any difference.
While reading at night, feeding his mind with edifying messages, preparing himself for a restful sleep, from time to time, among paragraphs, his eye would drift to the side, hoping to spot something different.
Everything remained the same.
He went on with his days until an event took him by surprise.
His work routine included spending many hours closed in an office, alone, dealing with messages, phone calls, banking matters, clients.
Even working from home part-time, those hours spent seating, staring at screens, numbers and solving problems, were extremely exhausting.
Breaks were always welcome, yet he denied himself that privilege. He needed to be more productive, meet deadlines, seeking excellence in everything.
One weekday, in the middle of the afternoon, someone simply burst into his office, almost knocking down the door.
Dad, dad! I prepared a surprise for you. You need to come with me now.
How could he refuse an invitation from such a sweet girl, wearing that smile of someone who had just been up to some mischief?
His daughter took him by the hand and led him to the back of the house. She had prepared a picnic just for the two of them.
She did it all by herself, without anyone´s help. She spread out a towel, set out plates and cutlery, and brought the juice and the remaining half of a cake.
Oh! And she had not forgotten her dad´s cup of coffee.
Beyond that, she set up a small chalkboard with the following words: Daughter and daddy´s picnic.
He was delighted. It meant a lot that she did it all by herself. The initiative, ability to prepare, the creative vision...
But she did not stop there... There were decorations around the towel. She had adorned it with a few items she found around the house. Small vases with flowers, travel´s souvenirs, a few of her own toys and... something of her dad´s.
He could not hold his emotion. Right there, besides the simple picnic, was his hourglass. It was lying on its side, the sand motionless.
He understood everything. He remembered the message:
Who says the sand cannot stop?
He sat down, savored the moment, and did not remember when he left.
