Being blessed by the honor of welcoming Spirits of the Lord, into our home in the form of our children is a joy beyond comparing.
The smiles of mothers and fathers upon the sight of the eagerly awaited new born, affirm that.
Sometimes, the child gets everyone by surprise, by arriving early, catching young, first-time parents off guard.
Relatives and friends flock to visit. Everyone wants to see the long-awaited little one.
The first months are a time of many discoveries. The first smile, the first babbling sounds, the first word.
Everything brings joy and surprise. And everything is recorded: from the first bath to the first steps. Each milestone is celebrated as a great victory.
It is the victory of someone returning to Earth, using a fragile body to bring even more sweetness to the parent´s lives.
Totally dependent. So fragile yet so captivating.
If all of this is deeply moving for the parents, can we imagine the feelings in the grandparents´hearts?
A doctor tells that when she was born, her grandfather went to the hospital to visit her in the incubator. She had been born prematurely.
He stood there gazing at her for a long time through the glass. His daughter, seeing him standing there silently for so long, watching the baby, became concerned.
She thought he might be feeling anxious or even distressed at the girl´s tiny size.
She approached him to offer comfort, but before she could say anything, he whispered something.
She could not quite hear it and asked him to repeat his words.
With a smile, the grandfather repeated: Blessed is You, God, our Father, King of the Universe, who have kept me alive and sustained me, and brought me safely to this moment.
It was his prayer of gratitude for the gift of life.

It is wonderful to reach old age with the blessing of grandchildren. The children of their children.
Becoming a grandparent is, indeed, one of the greatest and tenderest joys of life. It is as if the heart, mature and seasoned, gains a vibrant new breath of youth, filled with a love that overflows and multiplies in unexpected ways.
It is the blessing of being a father, of being a mother again, yet this time with the lightness that comes from being free of certain heavier responsabilities.
Grandchildren arrive as precious legacies, a completely free gift, as the poet Rachel de Queiroz puts it, allowing us to savor pure joy and childlike innocence without the anxieties of child-rearing.
Grandparents allow themselves the pleasure of doting, of telling those stories enriched by the wisdom of time, and of spoiling their grandchildren without the guilt of overindulgence.
Having a grandchild is like rediscovering one´s own inner child. It means seeing the world once more through a pair of curious, wonder-filled eyes.
It is a profound and magical connection, a bond that transcends generations, in which the accumulated wisdom meets the pure energy of the life that begins.
The hug of a grandchild is offers healing comfort, it is the certainty that love, the truly one, endures and flourishes forever. It is to be the strong root, yet also the sweetest safe haven.
An infinite happiness.
